Lord Dhanvantari is regarded as the Ayurvedic Father. He is the divine physician and the deity of health and medicine. Lord Dhanvantari originally emerged during the great Samundra Manthan (ocean churning), carrying the elixir of life. The elixir offered by Lord Dhanvantari was shared by all the gods.
The Story of Goddess Lakshmi
Goddess Lakshmi once insisted on accompanying Lord Vishnu on one of his earthly visits, according to mythology. Lord Vishnu accepted, but only on the condition that she not be smitten by earthly desires and not look south. Lord Vishnu’s condition was accepted by Goddess Lakshmi.
During their stay to Earth, however, Goddess Lakshmi was persuaded to glance in the south direction. When she couldn’t resist her desire any longer, she began heading south, where she was mesmerized by the beauty of the earth. When Lord Vishnu discovered that Goddess Lakshmi had breached her promise, he became enraged and ordered her to serve a poor farmer in his field for a period of twelve years.
With the entrance of Goddess Lakshmi, the poor farmer became prosperous and wealthy overnight. When Lord Vishnu returned to earth as an ordinary man after twelve years to reclaim Goddess Lakshmi, the farmer refused to release Goddess Lakshmi from his servitude.
When Lord Vishnu’s attempts failed, Goddess Lakshmi disclosed her actual identity to the farmer and told him that she couldn’t stay on earth any longer and needed to return to heaven. Goddess Lakshmi told the farmer that she would pay him a visit every year on Trayodashi, the night before Diwali. Every year, the farmer began preparing to welcome Goddess Lakshmi on Triyodashi, the day before Diwali. Year after year, the farmer becomes more successful and wealthy.
The story of Yama
Legend has it that there was a young King named Hima. His horoscope predicted that he would die from a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On the fourth night after their marriage, his wife kept King Hima awake and refused to let him sleep. She piled the gold and silver coins in her bedroom’s passageway and turned on every light in the house. She began reciting stories and singing songs. When Yamaraj, the god of death, appeared in the shape of a serpent, his eyes were blinded by the brightness of the light and he was unable to enter the King’s room.
So he climbed the mound of coins and spent the entire night listening to the wonderful sounds. Lord Yama had no alternative but to leave when the night gave way to dawn, and King Hima’s life was saved by his faithful wife. This Dhanteras became known as the “YAMADEEPDAAN” day from then on, and the lights remained lit throughout the night.
