He presented them with a flower garland that he had been wearing for days, expecting them to take it reverently.

To Durvasa’s surprise, Lord Shiva remained calm and smiled as he accepted the garland. However, Goddess Parvati couldn’t stand the terrible odor emerging from the garland and conveyed her displeasure. In a moment of wrath, Durvasa cursed the entire Kailash region, wreaking chaos and ruin.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Lord Shiva intervened and calmed Durvasa down. He asked the sage to remove his curse and recommended a way to reduce its effects. Lord Shiva told Durvasa to make an idol of Kal Bhairav, a ferocious incarnation of himself, and place it in Ujjain. The current temple construction is built on top of the ruins of an older temple. The ancient temple is supposed to have been built by a famous king named Bhadrasen.
