About the Vaishno Devi Temple

Banganga

For pilgrims who travel on foot to the Bhawan, Banganga is the first significant location. The Ganga is India’s holiest river, and Ban signifies arrow. When Maa Vaishnav and Langoor-Veer/Monkey were travelling to the goddess’ residence in the Trikuta Hills, it is said that they became thirsty. The goddess then discharged an arrow at this location, and water spilt out.
Temple of Charan Paduka
The second stop on the journey to Bhawan is the historic temple of Charan Paduka. According to legend, the goddess Maa Vaishnav stopped here and turned back for the first time to check whether Bhairon Nath is following her or not. The footprints of the deity are visible to pilgrims.
The Adhkuwari Mata Gufa
Due of Bhairon Nath’s pursuit, Maa Vaishnav is said to have pondered in a cave for nine months. When he eventually caught up with her, the goddess cut a hole in the wall with her trident and decapitated him in the shape of Mahakali, her harshest manifestation. Finally, Maa Vaishnav arrived at Bhawan, which is now referred to as her residence. Halfway to the Vaishno Devi Temple is Adhkuwari.
